Throughout my life, Dance has been a highly prevalent topic. Multiple family members were dancers, and I knew from the first time I saw The Nutcracker that I wanted to dance on stage. However, integration is an important part of the academic society. Think about how long Dance has been around. It is said that we used dance, or movement, to communicate before languages had formed, along with writing. The first recorded instance of dance was among the ancient civilizations of the middle east and India, along with the aboriginal people of the Americas, Australia, and Africa. This means that before we could speak or write, we used our bodies to gesture our thoughts. University of Wisconsin-Madison was the first University to create a Dance Program in 1926. One can infer that since 1926, dance was looked at as a career. A career in Dance can involve running a dance studio, dancing professionally around the U.S and World, teaching dance in grades K-12, or even Dance Therapy. An important idea to remember, is that Dance is encouraged to be a form of self-expression. It is a spontaneous form of Art where individuality is stimulated. In the assigned readings, “The History of The Academy and The Disciplines,” I was reassured that it’s okay for elements and disciplines to morph and change. The reality is that things have been evolving since the early years. However, it made me realize that we are always learning and gaining new knowledge even when we don’t seek it. Tying together different disciplines will make for a stronger society. The example used of a child’s mental well-being was eye opening. There isn’t just one person responsible, there are MANY people responsible. From social workers to surgeons, to therapists and case managers, not just one field will be able to carry out the necessary jobs. This calls for a wide range of studies…. INTERDISCIPLINARY. My first dance class I ever took was Ballet at 3 years old. I still remember my mom making me stand next to the Barré and insisting on snapping a picture after my very first class. Today I will take Ballet still, along with other dance classes to strengthen my body and technique. I will also take business classes to ensure I could run a studio someday. These business classes will also help me communicate with people in the field and grow my contacts. I’m thrilled to be able to integrate the two things! PSU has allowed me to take some special dance classes! I was excited for training in Aerial Dance last semester. Trying new things can be frightening and tricky at first (as you can see on my face in the picture below....) Photo by: Claudia Boutin ......eventually success follows! That wouldn't have been possible without help from my professor, Robin Marcotte, who was trained in MULTIPLE dance styles. He also went to Circus School! Photo by: Claudia Boutin Interdisciplinary Studies is a hot topic now, drawing in more and more students. In order to have a thriving world, we need people with all types of careers and paths. We can’t all possibly have just 1 field! Sometimes less isn’t more. More knowledge! Sources: "History." History. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Mar. 2017. "When Did Dance Start?" When Did Dance Start? N.p., n.d. We did some filling out of these posts in class, looking specifically at epistemology/methods/content and journals/scholars/orgs...but even without that extra material, this is a fine post, and I really enjoyed the historical background in particular!
